Plastic Bertrand
Plastic Bertrand was the name adopted by Roger Jouret (b. 24 February 1958, Brussels, Belgium), who was raised by his Russian father and made his first record as a child in 1966. After school he trained as a stage manager before becoming the drummer for Belgian punk trio Hubble Bubble, who made one album. During this spell he met producer Lou Deprijck who arranged for him to try his hand at a solo record. The result was the frenetic "€a Plane Pour Moi", (translated: "This Life's For Me") which was a big hit in Europe and also broke into the US Top 50. His UK follow-ups included a cover version of the Small Faces' "Sha La La La Lee'. Further recordings failed in the UK but he continued to release records in his native Belgium and also in Canada. All his material was recorded using session musicians, including Elton Motello who recorded in his own right. Part of his second album was recorded in Los Angeles, but English and American audiences were not yet ready to accept foreign language new wave, and Jouret failed to sustain his hit-making career for much longer. He subsequently found work as a record producer and songwriter, and represented Luxembourg at 1987"s Eurovision Song Contest, although "Amour Amour" trailed in second to last. The following year's "Slave To The Beat" was a minor US hit, but Jouret took time out in the 90s to run a contemporary art gallery. An upsurge of interest in his music brought him back to the stage in the late 90s. On a more unusual note, Jouret is now recognised as one of the world's leading Scrabble players.
