Living Sacrifice
One of the first Christian bands to make a mark on the US heavy metal scene, Living Sacrifice was formed in 1989 in Little Rock, Arkansas, by Darren Johnson (bass/vocals), Bruce Fitzhugh (guitar), Lance Garvin (drums), and Jason Truby (guitar). The quartet's thrash-influenced debut was released in 1991 on the R.E.X. Records label, and received favourable comparisons to albums by more mainstream, secular artists. The quickly recorded follow-up, Nonexistent, was a misguided attempt at death metal, with Johnson's vocals coming in for particular criticism. A return to a more traditional thrash sound on 1994's Inhabit was a welcome move, but following this release Johnson left the band. Fitzhugh took over on vocals and Jason Truby's brother Chris Truby was recruited as the new bass player. The band debuted for the Solid State label with 1997's Reborn, but despite good reviews a series of further personnel changes ensued. The Trubys departed and were replaced by Arthur Green (bass), Rocky Gray (b. 2 July 1974, USA; guitar) and Matt Putman (percussion), with the new personnel making a notable impact on the band's sound on the albums The Hammering Process (2000) and Conceived In Fire (2002). Despite enjoying the highest profile of their career, the members pulled the plug on Living Sacrifice in 2003. Gray went on to play with Evanescence and Soul Embraced, before rejoining Fitzhugh, Green and Garvin in a reunited Living Sacrifice.
