Larry Goldings
b. Lawrence Sam Goldings, 28 August 1968, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Known primarily for his organ playing, Goldings began at the age of seven on the piano. His father, a lawyer, was a classical music enthusiast and the sound of this music took hold of the young Goldings' interest. He also developed a keen ear by listening to popular songs from the radio and learning the harmonies. At the age of 12, Goldings attended music camp in Sweden, Maine, where he studied with his first important jazz instructor, Dave Cozzolongo, who taught him about the work of Bud Powell, Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson. In his high school years, Goldings played in school bands and local rock 'n' roll groups. He also attended a high-school jazz programme at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. At this time he was very influenced by the works of Dave McKenna, Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly, along with the groups of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. He was helped in his development by some influential teachers, including Ran Blake at the New England Conservatory of Music, Peter Cassino and even Keith Jarrett, on occasion.
