Jan Howard
b. Lula Grace Johnson, 13 March 1930, Kansas City, Missouri, USA. Howard, with a mixture of Cherokee and Irish blood, was raised in poverty, married at 15 and had three sons in quick succession. Her husband beat her and squandered what little money they had, and she divorced him in 1953. A few weeks later, she "married" a serviceman, who was supposedly divorced, and when that relationship collapsed, she moved to Los Angeles in the hope of finding work as a singer. She met and married aspiring songwriter Harlan Howard within 30 days. She sang on his demonstration records and her version of "Mommy For A Day" (for Kitty Wells) led to her own recording contract. Her first record was a duet with Wynn Stewart, "Yankee Go Home", which was followed by her first US country hit, "The One You Slip Around With", in 1960.
