The Incredible String Band
This UK folk outfit was formed in 1965 in Glasgow, Scotland, at Clive's Incredible Folk Club by Mike Heron (b. 12 December 1942, Glasgow, Scotland), Robin Williamson (b. 24 November 1943, Edinburgh, Scotland) and Clive Palmer (b. London, England). In 1966 the trio completed The Incredible String Band, a collection marked by an exceptional blend of traditional and original material, but they broke up upon its completion. Heron and Williamson regrouped the following year to record the exceptional 5000 Spirits Or The Layers Of The Onion. On this the duo emerged as a unique and versatile talent, employing a variety of exotic instruments to enhance their global folk palate. Its several highlights included Heron's "Painting Box" and two of Williamson's most evocative compositions, "Way Back In The 1960s" and "First Girl I Loved". The latter was later recorded by Judy Collins. A de rigueur psychedelic cover encapsulated the era and the pair were adopted by the emergent underground.
