The Feelies
While the Boss is certainly New Jersey's best-known and -loved musical export, and hair metal could be considered the official state genre, there's a legitimate case to be made for the Feelies being the ultimate Garden State rock act. The mercurial band appeared just after the CBGB's punk explosion took place across the East River; and offered a quirky, frenetic, less aggressive version of the punk/new wave style. Their 1980 debut, CRAZY RHYTHMS, is a true cult classic, and in retrospect had a huge influence on a wave of college rock and indie bands that came after them. The Feelies released three more records during the course of their on-again/off-again existence, breaking up for good in the early '90s. The various members of the band, however, all continue to play music.
