Mimi Farina
b. Mimi Margharita Baez, 30 April 1945, Palo Alto, California, USA, d. 18 July 2001, Mt. Tamalpais, California, USA. The younger sister of folk singer Joan Baez, Mimi was pursuing a solo career when she met and married Richard Fari¤a. The couple began performing together in 1964 and completed two exceptional albums, Celebrations For A Grey Day and Reflections In A Crystal Wind, before Richard was killed in a motorcycle accident on 30 April 1966. Two years later Mimi helped to compile the commemorative Memories, as well as Long Time Coming And A Long Time Gone, a collection of her husband's lyrics, poetry and short stories. Unsure of direction, she later joined the Committee, a satirical theatre group, where she worked as an improvisational actor before returning to singing. Having forged a short-lived partnership with Tom Jans, which resulted in one low-key album, she resumed her solo career. The consuming passion of Fari¤a's later years was Bread And Roses, an organization which brought live music into convalescent homes, psychiatric wards and drug rehabilitation centres.
