Dot Allison
b. Dorothy Elliot Allison, 17 August 1969, Edinburgh, Scotland. The implosion of One Dove amid record label wrangles and band arguments disappointed the multitudes that had relied upon the Scottish trio to provide the soothing denouement to a night's clubbing. Five years later, their chanteuse Allison emerged from the wreckage of One Dove (metaphorically) and a serious car accident (literally) and signed to Heavenly Records, an apposite home for her love of pop, dub and 60s soul. With the instrumental talents of Mani (Stone Roses, Primal Scream) and Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), and lyrics from legendary songwriter Hal David, 1999's Afterglow was not a radical departure from her former band's sound. Featuring dub excursions, dynamic pop and heartbreaking balladry, it overcame the incoherencies of her former band's Morning Dove White, although the clumsy production highlighted Andy Weatherall's subtle handling of the One Dove material. Live shows, complete with string quartet found Allison tipping her hat to Beth Orton, while "Mo' Pop" was brassy, cinematic pop … la Saint Etienne, both fellow Heavenly-affiliates and comedown favourites. However, while contributions to Death In Vegas' The Contino Sessions confirmed her as a doyenne cherished by the underground, Allison seems doomed to follow the under-achievement of One Dove.
