Peter Brown
b. 11 July 1953, Blue Island, Illinois, USA. Brown was a dance music vocalist, producer and keyboard player who made a brief impact in the late 70s. Brown taught himself to play the drums when he was aged 13. He then progressed to a four-track tape recorder and began composing and overdubbing in his bedroom. In 1977 he was in the midst of selling one of his paintings when he presented a demo recording to producer Cory Wade. Wade secured Brown a recording contract with the small Drive label, distributed by Florida's TK Records and his first single, "Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me?", became a hit at discos, reportedly becoming the first 12-inch single to sell a million copies, despite only reaching number 18 on the US pop charts and just missing the Top 40 in the UK. Brown's follow-up, "Dance With Me", which featured Betty Wright on vocals, became a US Top 10 hit the following year and he charted with one more major R&B US hit, "Crank It Up (Funk Town) Pt. 1" (1979). His chart career came to a halt in 1984. He also wrote "Material Girl" for Madonna.
