Henry Kaiser
b. 11 September 1952, Oakland, California, USA. Experimental, avant garde guitarist Henry Kaiser is a prolific musician whose work has run the gamut from free improvisation, to San Francisco-style 60s psychedelia to folk music. Kaiser began playing guitar in 1971, influenced by Captain Beefheart's music, and live concerts by San Francisco groups such as Quicksilver Messenger Service and the Grateful Dead. He has recorded numerous solo and group albums for labels such as SST Records and his own Metalanguage, and has collaborated on two albums with guitarists Richard Thompson and Fred Frith, along with former Beefheart drummer John French. Heart's Desire, released in 1990, included keyboards from early Grateful Dead member Tom Constanten. Kaiser has recorded with an eclectic range of musicians including John Zorn, Eugene Chadbourne, the Golden Palominos and Herbie Hancock. As a session player he had appeared on over 100 albums by the end of the 90s. During the same decade he explored world music on a series of albums with guitar veteran David Lindley, and teamed up with trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith for 1998's Miles Davis tribute, Yo Miles!.
