Lori Carson
b. USA. This highly-talented American singer-songwriter once analogized her method of writing as "capturing emotional memories". Originally based in New York, she served her apprenticeship on the live circuit before signing with Geffen Records in 1990. Shelter was produced by Hal Willner and featured an all-star cast of supporting musicians, but it failed to sell in a market as yet reluctant to take on board an intelligent female songwriter working in the modern rock idiom. She found more success as a long-term collaborator with Anton Fier in the Golden Palominos. Her vocal work on Golden Palominos tracks such as "Gun", "Little Suicides" and "Pure' (all from 1994"s Pure) gave her a reputation as a singer with a distinct voice, capable of echoing and expanding on the intimacy of Fier's early 90s work. Carson's second solo album, and her first for Restless Records, followed in 1995. Where It Goes was produced by Fier and included "You Won't Fall', which featured on the soundtrack to Stealing Beauty. A third set, 1997"s Everything I Touch Runs Wild, was co-produced by Carson herself, alongside Fier. It was distinguished by the inclusion of one of Carson's most effective songs, the beautiful "Something's Got Me". This was heavily promoted by the singer's record label, with Philip Steir (who remixed the Butthole Surfers' "Pepper") and Fier contributing remixes to a "bonus disc". The attendant video was directed by Matthew Rolston (most famous for shooting the Salt-N-Pepa/En Vogue video for "Whatta Man").
