Looper
Most rock artists think of the visual aspect of their stage show as merely "icing on the cake' for their music, but this Scottish electronic-pop trio seek to merge together visuals equally with their compositions. The band was originally formed in Glasgow, Scotland during 1997, led by then Belle And Sebastian bass player Stuart David. Originally thought of merely as a side-project to indulge in during time off from his main band, Looper was formed for a show at the Glasgow School of Art. The project soon took on a life of its own once non-musical members Karn David and Ronnie Black became involved (the former being in charge of projecting films and setting up sculptures, while the latter projected photographs). The band was offered a US recording contract with Seattle's Sub Pop Records shortly thereafter, which was soon followed by Stuart David's exit from Belle And Sebastian. A few singles preceded Looper's debut, 1999"s Up A Tree, which saw both Karn David and Black begin to play musical instruments on stage (samplers, guitars, keyboards and vocals). Looper supported the release with a couple of lengthy tours of the USA (one supporting the Flaming Lips), and shortly after the tour's completion, David published his debut novel, Nalda Said. Looper's second release, The Geometrid, was issued in 2000, and during the ensuing tour, the trio welcomed their bus driver, "Evil Bob", on stage with them (as a saxophone player). After a short hiatus, the quartet version of Looper was ready to debut on record in 2002, with their first release for new label Mute Records, The Snare.
