The Gourds
Originating from Austin, Texas, USA, the Gourds' distinctive alternative country sound marries influences as diverse as Lynyrd Skynyrd, David Bowie and Charlie Daniels. The band was formed in the mid-90s by singer/guitarist Kevin Russell (b. Beaumont, Texas, USA), a veteran of outfits including the Picket Line Coyotes, whom he once described as a cross between Hsker D and Hank Williams. They released three albums, Fashion Dogs, Upholstery Van Songs and We Shall Annex The Sudetenland, in the late 80s and early 90s, the latter pair being self-released cassettes. Among Russell's colleagues in Picket Line Coyotes was Robert Bernard, whose younger brother Claude later became a founder member of the Gourds. The Picket Line Coyotes broke up in 1991, shortly after another future Gourds member, Jimmy Smith, had joined them.
