Fila Brazillia
This Hull, Yorkshire, England-based instrumental duo comprises Steve Cobby (guitar/keyboards) and Dave McSherry (bass). Cobby endured a short spell with the unsuccessful pop/funk outfit Ashley And Jackson, while McSherry was a veteran of punk band Puncture Tough Guy. The duo first met in 1982 at a Puncture Tough Guy gig but did not start working together on a regular basis until 1991. They retired to their home town and helped set up Pork Recordings with Dave "Porky" Brennan. The duo's 12-inch single "Mermaids" became an underground club favourite, and was followed by several instrumental albums characterised by a heady mixture of funk, acid jazz, trip-hop and dub. These albums, alongside Cobby's work with Heights Of Abraham and his solo project the Solid Doctor, helped establish Pork as one of the UK's leading underground labels. Cobby and McSherry are also sought after remixers, with clients including Radiohead ("Climbing Up The Walls"), James ("Tomorrow"), Simple Minds ("Theme For Great Cities"), DJ Food ("Freedom"), the Orb ("Toxygene"), Black Uhuru ("Boof N' Baff N' Biff"), Busta Rhymes ("Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check"), Lamb ("Cotton Wool"), U.N.K.L.E. ("Berry Meditation"), and Moloko ("Lotus Eaters"). Several of these remixes were collected on the excellent Brazilification. The remix compilation was preceded by A Touch Of Cloth, the duo's first release on their own 23records label, which they set-up with frequent collaborator Sim Lister.
