Breakbeat Era
Breakbeat Era is a UK trio comprising drum 'n' bass heroes Roni Size and DJ Die (also of Reprazent) and fellow Bristolian, singer-songwriter Leonie Laws. Size and Die recorded a track together in 1997 before becoming aware of Laws' vocal talents through mutual friends. Laws gave them a home-recorded tape of her singing and Size and Die incorporated the vocals into the track, "Breakbeat Era". The track became a hit on the drum 'n' bass scene before being licensed to XL Records and breaking into the UK Top 40. Three subsequent singles, "Rancid", "Bullitproof" and "Ultra-Obscene' all received a positive critical response and huge support from DJs on the drum 'n' bass scene. Their highly praised live shows, which do not include Die or Size, feature Liam Duggan's electronic effects alongside Joe Allan (bass) and Toby Pascoe (drums) skilfully reproducing the furious electronic breakbeats. Some reviewers compare Laws" vocal style with punk artists such as Siouxsie [And The Banshees] and the Dead Kennedys.
