Blind Willie Johnson
An enormously influential gospel bluesman, Blind Willie Johnson played slide guitar with a haunting intensity that rivals Robert Johnson. His brief recording career ended with the onset of the Depression, but he continued performing up until his death from pneumonia in 1945.

I read album notes on Johnson, others have described his singing and slide work as a transcendental experience. He voice goes from a growl to a high pitched yelp in one verse. He played the guitar with a pocket knife. If you read a little about his life, you will understand where he is coming from. He was blinded by his step-mother throwing lye in his face. His house burnt on the 1940's and he died of pneumonia when the segregated hospital denied him entry.
