The Tea Party
Formed in Canada in 1990, the Tea Party comprises school friends Jeff Martin (b. Jeffrey Scott Brill, 1 October 1969, Windsor, Ontario, Canada; guitars, vocals), Stuart Chatwood (b. Windsor, Ontario, Canada; bass, vocals) and Jeff Burrows (b. Windsor, Ontario, Canada; drums, percussion). The band released a limited edition debut album in 1991 before signing a major label contract with EMI Records. Their climactic, highly atmospheric major label debut, 1993's Splendor Solis, produced immediate comparisons with both the Doors and Led Zeppelin. Well-crafted musical compositions complemented Martin's singing style, which was based on his early appreciation of blues artists such as B.B. King and Howlin' Wolf. His detached, broody lyrics also added to the record's sense of doomed adventure. It later achieved platinum status in Canada. The follow-up collection, The Edge Of Twilight, used over 31 instruments in the studio, notably eastern-flavoured strings and percussion. The introduction of world music into their otherwise hard rock songs seemed to invite further Led Zeppelin comparisons. Full of sophisticated musicianship and technical ability, The Edges Of Twilight was an interesting contrast to rock's mid-90s flirtation with punk minimalism. The acoustic, eastern-tinged mini-album Alhambra was followed by the mordant Transmission, on which the band adopted a harder-edged, industrial sound. The weaker TRIPtych followed in 1999 but was followed after a lengthy break with the excellent Seven Circles in 2005.
