Meat Loaf
Who would have ever thought that opera-rock fronted by a 300 pound-plus singer would equal massive chart success worldwide? That's exactly what happened with Marvin Aday, better known as Meat Loaf. Along with collaborator/producer Jim Steinman, he created one of rock's biggest and most enduring albums--1977's epic BAT OUT OF HELL. Combining a theater-trained voice as big as his frame (he'd previously acted and sung in ROCK HORROR PICTURE SHOW among others) with Springsteen-plus arena-rock production, Meat Loaf took the world by storm, but faded away shortly thereafter. His massive comeback 16 years later with BAT OUT OF HELL II was a storybook ending that caught the music industry by surprise and earned the singer a Grammy award.
