Joe Pass
b. Joseph Anthony Jacobi Passalaqua, 13 January 1929, New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA, d. 23 May 1994, Los Angeles, California, USA. In his mid- and late teens guitarist Pass worked with a number of name bands, including those led by Tony Pastor and Charlie Barnet. From the early 50s until the beginning of the following decade, Pass dwelt in self-imposed obscurity playing when and where he could in order to sustain a drug habit for which he also served a prison sentence. The 60s saw his rehabilitation and revealed an astonishing talent. Following his internment at the Synanon Foundation in Santa Monica, a self-help regime that allowed him to break his habit, Pass was returned to the outside world as a reformed character, and a media-worthy example of the powers of Synanon healing (since largely discredited).
