Gunther Schuller
b. Gunther Alexander Schuller, 22 November 1925, New York City, New York, USA. The son of a violinist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Schuller studied flute and French horn together with arranging, composition and music theory. Schuller played the French horn in several symphony orchestras before turning to jazz, recording with Miles Davis in the late 40s and early 50s, including the groundbreaking Birth Of The Cool sessions. Schuller subsequently became a prime mover in what he referred to, in a 1957 lecture, as "Third Stream" music, a form that sought to blend jazz with appropriate aspects of western classical music He founded the Jazz And Classical Music Society with John Lewis in 1955. Schuller continued to combine his interests in classical music and jazz in his playing, composing and teaching career.
