Dave Douglas
One of the most important jazzmen on the downtown New York scene in the 1990s and 2000s, trumpeter Dave Douglas played in a number of important groups (the Tiny Bell Trio, John Zorn's Masada) in addition to releasing a wealth of visionary-yet-accessible albums under his own name. Douglas's work is informed as much by modern classical composers (Bartok, Stravinsky, et al) as by 1960s progressive jazz. His style, while undeniably forward-looking, is linear enough to give even his most avant garde endeavors a cohesive quality. He's a cutting-edge improviser able to mix it up with the likes of Zorn and Dutch wildman Han Bennink, but is just as comfortable sitting in with pop artists (Suzanne Vega, Sean Lennon, and Ron Sexsmith have all employed Douglas in the studio).
