Westside Connection
A three-way collaboration between rappers Ice Cube (b. O'Shea Jackson, 15 June 1969, Crenshaw, South Central Los Angeles, California, USA), Mack 10 (b. D. Rolison, 9 August 1971, Inglewood, California, USA) and WC, Westside Connection was started as a riposte to what the participants saw as "dissing' by their east coast colleagues. The tone of 1996"s Bow Down was one of outright hostility, particularly on tracks such as "King Of The Hill", Ice Cube's vindictive attack on the main protagonists in Cypress Hill. "Sen Dog you can't rap from the guts/And B-Real sounding like he got baby nuts/Comin' with voice high-pitched/The B in B-Real must stand for bitch". More discerning hip-hop commentators reacted with dismay at one of the most vicious albums in gangsta rap's already controversial history. In truth, the album was also a musical disappointment, displaying an over-reliance on repetitive, stripped-down funk to underpin its bleak lyrical narratives.
