finetune artist: We Five

Formed in 1965, this Los Angeles, California, USA quintet was viewed as a stepping-stone between the clean-cut folk of the Kingston Trio and the rock-based perspective offered by the Byrds. Michael Stewart (guitar/vocals), Beverley Bivens (vocals), Bob Jones (guitar/vocals), Jerry Burgan (guitar/vocals) and Pete Fullerton (bass/vocals) enjoyed a US Top 3 hit that year with "You Were On My Mind", an exuberant song which was a British hit in the opportunistic hands of Crispian St. Peters. We Five's conservative approach obscured their more inventive moments. Songwriter John Stewart, Michael's brother, contributed several excellent originals, but the group lacked the charm of the Mamas And The Papas and Spanky And Our Gang, two acts sharing similar roots and styles. The quintet scored one more US Top 40 hit with "Let's Get Together", before breaking up in 1967. We Five have since re-formed and split on several occasions, although several new arrivals replaced unwilling original members. Stewart and Jones subsequently formed country-folk group West, while the former later pursued an executive career with Capitol Records.
