Shadowfax
Taking their name from Gandalf's horse in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings, this Windham Hill Records associated band pursued a path of new age inspired folk, bringing in strong elements of jazz and medieval music. The unit was formed near Chicago, Illinois, USA during the winter of 1972 by Chuck Greenberg (b. 25 March 1950, Chicago, Illinois, USA, d. 4 September 1995, Santa Cruz Island, California, USA; saxophone/lyricon), G.E. Stinson (b. Greg Stinson, August 1949, Kingfisher Oklahoma, USA; guitar) and Phil Maggini (b. March 1949, Chicago, Illinois, USA; bass), later adding Stuart Nevitt (b. March 1953, Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA, d. 15 March 2008, Rio Rancho, New Mexico, USA; drums/percussion) in 1974. Their debut Watercourse Way made little impression upon release in 1976 and it was not until Shadowfax in 1982 that the group received both success and acclaim. This album reached a high placing on the Billboard jazz chart and won the top new jazz band award in Cashbox. The band added Jamii Szmadzinski (b. 1954, Michigan, USA; violin) and Jared Stewart (b. February 1956, Los Angeles, California, USA; piano/synthesizer) for the following year's Shadowdance.
