Way Out West
This eclectic dance music act was formed in Bristol, England by Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren. The latter was a veteran DJ of the Liverpool club Cream and had also previously collaborated with Massive Attack and Smith And Mighty. The duo originally released two independent singles as Echo in the early 90s and as Way Out West continued to record independently, releasing a brace of singles for Peace Of The Action. In 1994, they were signed by James Barton (the organizer of Cream) to Deconstruction Records and achieved immediate success with "Ajare", released at the end of 1994. Following the success in the clubs of the single "Domination" they achieved more widespread success when their atmospheric single "The Gift" reached the UK Top 20 in the summer of 1996. Rather than issue a quick follow-up, Wisternoff and Warren became involved with remix and production work with Dubstar, Fluke and the Orb. With the proceeds from this work they were able to overhaul and upgrade their existing studio. Their self-titled debut album was branded by some sections of the dance community as the "sunrise sound", reflecting the warm, dreamlike qualities of such songs as "Blue", the album's first single.
