Tones On Tail
This three-piece avant garde rock band's brief tenure stretched from the summer of 1982 to late 1985. The band was built around the remnants of the higher-profile Northampton group Bauhaus. Both Kevin Haskins (b. 19 July 1960, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England; drums) and Daniel Ash (b. 31 July 1957, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England; vocals/guitar) had been an essential part of that band, and Glenn Campling (bass/keyboards) had previously been their roadie. "We're doing things the other way round to what Bauhaus did. They started off as a live band, then went into the studio. We started off as a studio band and have to branch off into live to show ourselves", Ash ruminated to the press. The trio released several singles and EPs and the full-length Pop (1984), and were noted for the quality of their (infrequent) live appearances. However, when David J. finished recording with the Jazz Butcher, he linked once more with his old Bauhaus colleagues and the more successful (and rock-orientated) Love And Rockets signalled the death knell for Tones On Tail. The 1998 compilation Everything! provides the best summation of their brief recording career.
