finetune artist: Front Line Assembly

Despite helping to create the industrial rock genre and being cited as an important influence by many, when similarly styled units began infiltrating the mainstream during the early 90s, for reasons unknown, Front Line Assembly never truly managed to make the transition. The band originally came together during 1985, in Vancouver, Canada, when former Skinny Puppy member Bill Leeb aka Wilhelm Schroeder decided to give it a go on his own. Almost immediately, Leeb issued two cassette-only releases, Nerve War and Total Terror, that were reissued years later (with bonus tracks) under the titles Total Terror I and Total Terror II. Synth player Michael Balch was present on the early recordings, and two years later Leeb enlisted Rhys Fulber into Front Line Assembly, resulting in a long and fruitful artistic relationship. The band began churning out releases at a rapid-fire pace for a variety of labels. It was not until the band signed American distribution, Wax Trax! Records, that Front Line Assembly began carving their niche - metallic techno with an unmistakable dance groove. Late 80s/early 90s releases such as Gashed Senses & Crossfire and Caustic Grip (the first without Balch) made the band a true industrial force, and as they moved further into the decade, Front Line Assembly's sound took a more decidedly heavier turn. Their union with the Third Mind label resulted in the release of one of the duo's finest recordings, Tactical Neural Implant, before moving to the heavy metal imprint Roadrunner Records.
