Originally an outlet for the musician John Balance's sonic explorations, Coil took permanent shape around Balance and his partner, the ex-Psychic TV keyboardist and programmer Peter Christopherson, in 1983. The band's uncompromising debut, SCATOLOGY, set the scene for subsequent decades of restless experimentalism, which drew on such widely varied sources as industrial music, poetry, black magic, Middle Eastern music, Balearic house dance music, and esoteric electronica. Though members and collaborators came and went throughout the '80s, '90s, and 2000s, the duo of Balance and Christopherson remained constant in its tenacious testing of musical boundaries until Balance's death in 2004.
