The Grid
This innovative UK dance music outfit features Dave Ball (b. David Ball, 3 May 1959, Blackpool, Lancashire, England) and Richard Norris (b. 23 June 1965, London, England). Ball's name was familiar to many through his work as part of another highly successful duo, Soft Cell. Having split from Soft Cell partner Marc Almond in 1984, Ball would work with Psychic TV and Jack The Tab before linking with Norris, a former music journalist and veteran of several outfits including the Fruitbats, Innocent Vicars, East Of Eden and Mr Suit. Like many of techno's new breed, the Grid did not limit themselves to their own releases, clocking up an impressive array of remixes for other artists. These included several major names, Brian Eno, Happy Mondays, Pet Shop Boys, the Art Of Noise and Soft Cell. Even Vic Reeves ("Abide With Me") came in for the Grid treatment. Their own recording career attracted plenty of praise in both the mainstream and specialist dance music press, who even tolerated the band playing live behind screens. However, since their debut, "On The Grid", in June 1989, their CV was chequered by short tenures with their record labels. Following four singles and an album for EastWest, the duo joined Rhythm King Records for a one-off single ("Origins Of Dance'), before departing for Virgin Records. 1992"s eclectic 456 set for the latter included collaborations with Robert Fripp, Yello and Sun Ra. Singles like "Crystal Clear", however, revealed a return to the stripped down, meaner techno sound.
