Tara Maclean
b. 25 October 1973, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Singer-songwriter MacLean was raised in locations as diverse as the Caribbean, Toronto and British Columbia. From a musical family, she appeared on television at the age of 11 singing with her stepfather, guitarist Marty Reno. She later worked in the UK, before returning to Canada where she was discovered singing on a ferry. MacLean was subsequently signed to the Vancouver-based Nettwerk Productions in April 1995. The label placed her song "Let Her Feel The Rain' on a benefit compilation for rape crisis centres, and, impressed by the response, placed MacLean in the studio with producer Norm Kerner. The hastily recorded Silence featured songs co-written with Jon Levine from the Philosopher Kings. A bleak, introspective work, dealing with child abuse among other subject matters, the album received an encouraging response from the folk and indie communities. Following the album's release, MacLean developed her live skills opening for acts such as Barenaked Ladies and Paula Cole, and touring with Lilith Fair. Soundtrack work was followed by November 1997's If You See Me EP. After several abortive sessions, she relocated to producer Malcolm Burn's New Orleans studio to record tracks for her second album. A more cohesive and uplifting set, October 1999"s Passenger featured tracks co-written by MacLean's husband, guitarist Bill Bell.
