Nashville Pussy
The late 90s saw a resurgence of brash and politically incorrect rock outfits crop up in the USA, notably Buckcherry, D Generation, the Toilet Boys, and especially, Nashville Pussy. Originally formed in Georgia during 1996, the band comprising the husband and wife duo of Blaine Cartwright (vocals/guitar) and Ruyter Suys (guitar), plus Jeremy Thompson (drums) and the larger than life Corey Parks (bass) plucked its name from a lewd stage rap courtesy of Ted Nugent, on his classic 1978 concert set, Double Live Gonzo. After several independently issued singles appeared in 1997, Nashville Pussy released their debut, Let Them Eat Pussy, a year later on the Amphetamine Reptile label. The buzz surrounding the band grew loud and fierce, especially owing to their theatrical shock-rock live show, which featured Parks blowing fire, and its two female members scantily clad and sporadically kissing each other. A recording contract with major label, PolyGram Records was waiting right around the corner, who in turn reissued the quartet's debut the same year. The band supported the album with a tour opening for Marilyn Manson and landed a Grammy nomination, in addition to substantial coverage in the UK music press. Despite all the accolades and publicity, Nashville Pussy was unhappy with PolyGram, and jumped labels for their follow-up, High As Hell, issued in 2000 on TVT Records. Shortly after the album's release, Parks exited the group (owing to internal band tension), which led to the arrival of first Tracey Almazon and then Katie Lynn Campbell. The line-up changes did not dull the band's penchant for raunchy and abrasive rock however, as evidenced by 2002's Say Something Nasty (which signalled yet another label switch, this time to Artemis Records).
