Static-X
This Los Angeles, California, USA-based rock outfit was formed by Wayne Static (b. Wayne Wells, 4 November 1970, Muskegon, Michigan, USA; vocals/guitar), Tony Campos (b. Antonio Campos, California, USA; bass), Koichi Fukuda (b. Osaka, Japan; keyboards, programming) and Ken Jay (b. Kenneth Lacey, 10 June 1971, Jamaica, Illinois, USA; drums). Static and Jay originally met up in Chicago, where Static played in goth band Deep Blue Dream and Jay worked in a record store with Billy Corgan (Static's band shared rehearsal space with a pre-fame Smashing Pumpkins). Static and Jay subsequently relocated to Los Angeles where there was a more fertile metal scene. Having recruited Fukuda and Campos the band began to develop their trademark "rhythmic trancecore" sound, essentially an update of the electronic industrial sound of Ministry and White Zombie. Two demo tapes, recorded in late 1996 and early 1997 respectively, helped the band win a contract with Warner Brothers Records in February 1998. They set about recording their debut album in Los Angeles with veteran producer Ulrich Wild. "Bled For Days" gained valuable exposure on the soundtrack of horror movie Bride Of Chucky, while the highly influential Korn included the hyper-aggressive "Push It" on their Extra Values bonus CD. Both tracks were featured on the acclaimed Wisconsin Death Trip, released in March 1999, although critics were equally drawn to Static and Jay's darkly impressionistic lyrics, and the rich, ambient textures of tracks such as "Stem" and the closing "December".
