Souls of Mischief
Part of Del Tha Funkee Homosapien's Oakland, California, USA-based Hieroglyphics enclave, Souls Of Mischief debuted with some panache in 1993. With samples drawn from a selection of artists as diverse as Grover Washington, Curtis Mayfield and Main Source, it demonstrated their ability to blend mellow beats with articulate lyrics. The crew comprises Tajai, A-Plus, Opio and Phesto. Their recording career began when Del's cousin, Ice Cube, sorted him out with a recording contract, he in turn suggesting the Souls Of Mischief should be next up. They recorded a song with Del entitled "Burnt" (featured on the b-side to "Mistadobalina'), from whence they were spotted. Tajal and A-Plus were kicking lyrics alongside labelmate Spice I while still in eighth grade, and their vocal dexterity was a stand-out feature on their debut album, 93 "Til Infinity, with combative rhymes overlaying the sparkling production work of A-Plus, Del, and Hieroglyphics production guru, Domino. No Man's Land was a dark, unsettling follow-up which received mixed reviews and lost the crew many of their original fans. They have subsequently concentrated on releasing cassette-only music through their Hieroglyphics website, although they have yet to match the effervescent panache of their debut.
