Snot
This Santa Barbara, California, USA-based hardcore band was formed in 1994 by Lynn Strait (b. 1968, Manhasset, New York, USA, d. 11 December 1998, California, USA; vocals) and Mike Doling (guitar), with John "Tumor" Fahnestock (bass) and Sonny Mayo (guitar) joining the following year. The band's early demos and huge popularity on the local club scene attracted the attention of Geffen Records, who signed them a month after Jamie Miller (drums) completed the line-up in June 1996. The band embarked on a tour with Sugar Ray and the Urge the following March, shortly before the release of their powerful debut Get Some. Snot's album proved popular with the new generation of alternative metal fans in addition to their hardcore fanbase, boding well for the band's future. In March 1998, the original line-up entered a studio together for the last time, recording "Absent" for the Strangeland soundtrack. Two months later Mayo left to join Amen, and was replaced by Mike Smith. The band made great inroads on that summer's OzzFest, although Strait was arrested for an act of indecent exposure at July's show in Boston. A month later Miller and Smith left to form Hero, with the former temporarily replaced by drummer Shannon Larkin (ex-Ugly Kid Joe). The band had recorded the majority of the backing tracks for their new album when Strait was tragically killed in a multiple-car accident while driving to Los Angeles in December 1998. Friends from leading alternative bands such as Korn, Limp Bizkit, Sevendust, Incubus and Sugar Ray were recruited to write and record lyrics to the reworked backing tracks, with the impressive results released on the tribute collection Strait Up. The album was released in November 2000, by which time Doling was playing with Soulfly and Fahnestock had been reunited with Mayo in Amen.
