Slaughter
When Vinnie Vincent's Invasion disintegrated in 1988, vocalist Mark Slaughter and bassist Dana Strum decided to start a new group under the name Slaughter. Recruiting guitarist Tim Kelly (b. 1963, d. 5 February 1998) and drummer Blas Elias, they soon secured a contract with Chrysalis Records and recorded Stick It To Ya. With an approach that fused elements of Kiss, Mtley Cre and Bon Jovi, their style was ultimately derivative, yet distinctive owing to the stratospheric-like vocals of Mark Slaughter. Three-minute blasts of memorable metallic pop, complete with rousing anthemic choruses was the usual recipe, epitomised by 1990's two US Top 30 singles, "Up All Night" and "Fly To The Angels". Following support slots to Kiss on their American tour, the album took off and peaked at number 18 during its six-month residency on the Billboard album chart. A mini-album followed, which featured live versions of songs from their debut release. The follow-up album was even more successful, peaking at US number 8 in May 1992. The band's music has grown increasingly antiquated as the decade has progressed, however, although they have continued to peddle their melodic pop-metal on the retro CMC International label. They were shaken by the death of Kelly in a car accident in 1998. Eternal Live captured two of Kelly's final concert performances with the band, one in Mexico, the other in their hometown of Las Vegas. Kelly was replaced by Jeff Blando.
