Sky Cries Mary
Though they are from Seattle, USA, Sky Cries Mary's sound has often been described as sponge, as opposed to grunge. Inspired by an Einstrzende Neubauten concert, Roderick Romero formed Grinder Crease with Ken Stringfellow and John Auer, before a deal with French label New Rose led to a name change. Their debut was an experimental industrial record, and included one of the band's most popular songs "When The Fear Stops". By 1990 Stringfellow and Auer had left to form the Posies, and Romero released the transitional Don't Eat The Dirt EP. His new band became infamous for their chaotic live shows, incorporating costumes and stage props. A compilation video featuring live footage was responsible for getting the band a deal with the World Domination label in 1992, but Romero had by then decided to end the band's industrial/experimental phase. The new line-up featured Romero's future wife Anisa on vocals, Todd Robbins aka DJ Fallout (ambient mix/turntables), Bennett James (drums), Gordon Raphael (keyboards), Ivan Kral (guitar), Joseph E. Howard (bass/sitar/mellotron), this unit preferring a softer mantric approach, quite unlike their obvious Hendrixisms. With Marc Olsen replacing Kral on guitar, and new bass player Juano, the band released a creative and original debut. A Return To The Inner Experience contained mystic lyrics and tribal rhythms, together with interestingly different versions of Iggy Pop's "We Will Fall" and the Rolling Stones' "2000 Light Years". Recruiting Michael Cozzi (ex-Shriekback) on guitar, the band released the prog-rock orientated This Timeless Turning in 1994. Signing to Warner Brothers Records in 1995, the band's major label debut was an impressively diverse album that experimented with ambient and trance grooves.
