Skinlab
Perennial Bay Area also-rans, Skinlab have never been able to rid themselves of comparisons with the band that "discovered" them, Machine Head. Formed in San Francisco, California, USA, in 1995 by bass player/vocalist Steev Esquivel (ex-Defiance) and guitarist Mike Roberts, the pair had also recruited drummer Paul Hopkins and second guitarist Gary Wendt in time for their debut Bound, Gagged And Blindfolded. Produced by Andy Sneap, it was a crushingly heavy album, the band's ferocious attack earning much praise in the metal press, although Machine Head's Burn My Eyes was often a point of reference. Wendt and Roberts departed soon after the album's release, to be replaced by ex-Skrew guitarist Steve "Snake" Green and Esquivel's long-time friend Scott Sargeant. A strong appearance at Holland's Dynamo festival prefaced a limited EP Eyesore, a stopgap before the band returned to the studio with Sneap for the follow-up, Disembody: The New Flesh.
