Smashing Pumpkins
Before The Smashing Pumpkins, alternative rock had yet to touch upon the grandiose arena rock of the 1970s. Leader/singer/guitarist/songwriter Billy Corgan composed songs that were somehow part Boston, Cure, Queen, and Jane's Addiction. The Pumpkins were rewarded by becoming one of the biggest rock bands of the '90s. Corgan broke up the band at the beginning of the new century, yet after trying his hand as the leader of the band Zwan and as a solo artist, he reformed Smashing Pumpkins with a new line-up. The band has been touring and recording since 2005.

The new album rocks, whether you want to think of it as Pumpkins or Billy or whatever... I agree with what someone else already said, Billy always recorded everything back in the days before "Melon Collie," so what's the difference now? Anyway, it's good either way you think of it, that's my point. -

Smashing Pumpkins to me is the greatest band ever. i DO MISS Darcy tho, and i wish she was still in the band. -

James Iha contributed practically nothing to the Pumpkins. And the 1999 departure of D'Arcy (and arrival of Melissa Auf Der Maur) demonstrates D'Arcy was non-essential as well. Many (myself included) thought Melissa was a better fit than D'Arcy ever was. This leads me to conclude that the core of the Pumpkins was Jimmy Chamberlin and Billy. Any band with those two together should be considered the "true" Pumpkins! -

The Smashing Pumpkins are re-formed, and recording a new album! Should be out in time for a summer festival tour to promote it. Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin are the only confirmed members...it's doubtful that D'Arcy or James Iha will return.
