Yves Montand
b. Ivo Livi, 13 October 1921, Monsummano Terme, Pistoia, Tuscany, Italy, d. 9 November 1991, Senlis, Oise, Picardie, France. Montand's Italian parents moved to France where his father became a leader in the French Communist Party. Yves was also later a member of the party until the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. As a young man he worked in Marseilles, France, as a hairdresser. In the late 40s and 50s he appeared in films, among them toile Sans Lumire aka Star Without Light (1946), L'Idoel (1948), Souvenirs Perdus aka Lost Souvenirs (1950), Paris Chante Toujours! aka Paris Still Sings! (1952), Le Salaire De La Peur aka The Wages Of Fear (1953), and the films that drew international attention, Tempi Nostri aka A Slice Of Life and L'Air De Paris (both 1954, singing on the soundtrack of the latter). He also narrated the 1957 documentary Django Reinhardt. In the 60s and beyond, Montand appeared in Let's Make Love (1960, co-starring with Marilyn Monroe), Goodbye Again (1961), Is Paris Burning? (1966), Grand Prix (1966), Z (1969), On A Clear Day You Can See Forever (co-starring with Barbra Streisand) and The Red Circle (both 1970), Csar Et Rosalie (1972), Police Python 357 (1976), I " Comme Icare (1979), Garon! (1983), Jean De Florette (1986), in the role of Cesar Soubeyran, which he reprised in the sequel, Manon Des Sources (1986), and Three Places For The 26th (1988).
