Red Snapper
David Ayers (guitar), Ali Friend (double bass) and Richard Thair (drums) form the creative core of Red Snapper, one of a number of bands who in the mid-90s began creating instrumental music from textures and beats after the rise of ambient, dance music and hip-hop. Many bizarre terms have been used to describe their music, particularly trip-hop and jazz. Their jazz flavour comes not from the upright bass and saxophone but from their aesthetic of experimentation and improvisation in absolute music, creating sounds that do not necessarily adhere to any formulas, following the tradition of such innovators as Charles Mingus and Miles Davis. Hip-hop and jungle rhythms, twangy 50s guitar and overblown saxophone can be heard in the music, yet they are merely flavours in Red Snapper's own abstract soundtracks. Where they meet with dance music is not so much in the sounds used but the concept of rhythmical structureless textures which house and techno brought to the popular conscience.
