J.C. Lodge
b. June Carol Lodge. Lodge's entrance into the reggae world came courtesy of an audition for Joe Gibbs. Their first recording together was a version of Charley Pride's "Someone Loves You, Honey", which went to the top of the Jamaican charts. Ironically, the result for Gibbs was bankruptcy, after he failed to pay royalties to the songwriter. In 1988 she recorded "Telephone Love" for Gussie Clarke, which subsequently became a big hit in Jamaica and America, where, after being housed on the Pow Wow label, it achieved crossover status. Its success brought her to the attention of the predominantly hip-hop-focused Tommy Boy Records. Her debut for Tommy Boy played safe by revisiting "Telephone Love", and branching out musically to encompass soul and rock. Also a talented painter, Lodge has exhibited in Kingston art galleries, and acted in several theatrical productions.
