Peaches & Herb
Herb Fame (b. Herbert Feemster, 1 October 1942, Washington, DC, USA) and Francine Barker (b. Francine Edna Hurd Barker, 28 April 1947, Washington, DC, USA, d. 13 August 2005, Maryland, USA). These two Washington, DC, USA-based singers were signed separately to the same record label, Date, and met on a promotional tour. Producer Dave Kapralik put the couple together, and their easy, if unexceptional, voices took their second single "Close Your Eyes" into the US Top 10 in 1967. The duo continued to figure in the charts with "For Your Love" and "Love Is Strange"(both 1967), "United" (1968) and "When He Touches Me (Nothing Else Matters)" (1969). However, although Barker was featured on these records, she had been replaced for live performances by former session singer Marlene Mack (b. Virginia, USA). The "sweethearts of soul" were ostensibly disbanded in July 1970 when a disillusioned Herb Fame left music in favour of the police department, although a "bogus" duo hurriedly stepped in to fill the gap. Herb resumed recording in 1976 with a new "Peaches", Linda Greene (b. Washington, DC, USA). Following a brief spell at MCA Records, the reconstituted couple moved to Polydor Records where they enjoyed a major US Top 5 hit with "Shake Your Groove Thing" (1978). The following year, "Reunited" reached number 1 in the USA and number 4 in the UK. They continued to enjoy success into the 80s, but these later releases lacked the charm of their early work. Herb returned to the police department before reviving the group again in the early 90s with a new Peaches, Patrice Hawthorne.
