The Weather Girls
Vocalists Izora Rhodes Armstead (b. 1942, Texas, USA, d. 16 September 2004, California, USA) and Martha Wash (b. USA) met in the San Francisco-based gospel group, NOW (News Of The World) prior to joining the backing group of rising disco star Sylvester. Dubbed Two Tons O' Fun in deference to their rotund stature, the duo recorded for the Fantasy Records label before securing a measure of infamy, as the Weather Girls, for their tongue-in-cheek release, "It's Raining Men'. First released in the USA in 1982, the single achieved a greater success in the UK where it later peaked at number 2 in 1984 after re-entering the chart. Subsequent releases however lacked the undeniable charm of their major hit, but admirably showcased the Weather Girls" powerful voices. Wash later embarked on a solo career while Armstead moved to Frankfurt and formed a new version of the Weather Girls with her daughter Dynell Rhodes, touring and recording a number of albums for WEA Germany. Ex-Spice Girls singer Geri Halliwell topped the UK charts in 2001with a cover version of "It's Raining Men".
