New Bomb Turks
A loud but melodious US alternative punk band, New Bomb Turks' manifesto was to rid their genre of its more dour concerns, re-establishing the sheer adrenaline rush and hedonism of the music. They met while studying at Ohio State University, where each of the members - Eric Davidson (vocals), Jim Weber (guitar), Matt Reber (bass) and Bill Randt (drums) - read English. They first worked together as disc jockeys on campus radio station WSOR, gradually pulling together as a band and making their debut through a series of limited-issue 7-inch singles on the Datapanik label. It was with their 1992 debut album, however, that their arrival was recognized, with Maximum Rock 'n' Roll magazine calling it the "album of the year, maybe of the last five years". In its wake, New Bomb Turks sagged under the expectations of such hysterical praise, taking their time before preparing a follow-up set, then blasting through the recording sessions to produce Information Highway Revisited in just 60 hours. It was a recording that retained their spontaneity and established them as qualitative peers of Green Day and the Offspring, even if its sales profile was dwarfed by the success of those bands. Pissing Out The Poison reminded fans of their early days, being a double album comprising singles for labels including Sympathy For The Record Industry, eMpTy, Get Hip, Demo Derby, Bag Of Hammers and Damaged Goods, plus cover versions of material by the New York Dolls and Hawkwind. The subsequent Scared Straight and At Rope's End retained all of the band's sleazy punk charm but were promoted to a wider audience thanks to a new contract with Epitaph Records. Their most recent recordings still demonstrate some punkish anger, even though they are now seen as the old guard.
