Possessed
Formed in San Francisco, California, USA, in 1983, this heavy metal band comprised Jeff Becerra (bass/vocals), Mike Torrao (guitar), Larry Lalonde (b. Lawrence Lalonde, 12 September 1968, Richmond, California, USA; guitar) and Mike Sus (drums). Through early demos and their inclusion on the Metal Massacre VI compilation album, released on Metal Blade Records in 1984, the band attracted the attention of Combat Records, who promptly signed them. This resulted in their debut, Seven Churches, released in 1985. Growling vocals and ultra-fast Slayer-influenced riffs were the order of the day and the band quickly made their mark on the death metal underground. The next album, produced by ex-Rods drummer Carl Canedy, was Beyond The Gates, released in 1986. The band toured throughout Europe building a strong following, and on their return to America they recorded and released a mini-album entitled The Eyes Of Horror. Produced by guitar maestro Joe Satriani, the album was, as expected, heavily guitar-orientated, but owing to internal wrangles, the band folded soon after its release. Becerra was later paralyzed in a shooting accident, while Torrao recorded some demos in the early 90s with a new line-up before laying the band to rest. Lalonde went on to work with Blind Illusion and Primus.
