finetune artist: Patty Griffin

b. 16 March 1964, Old Town, Maine, USA. This US singer-songwriter made her name on the Boston/Cambridge folk scene in the mid-90s, leading to a major label recording contract with A&M Records. Griffin began writing songs as a teenager but at this point in her life was more interested in athletics than music. By the time she relocated to Boston she was married to musician Nick Cobb and working as a waitress. She began performing her own songs in local coffee houses in the early 90s, and recorded a batch of this material on her first demo tape. Griffin's marriage broke down in 1994 but her music career began to take off, with her song "White Dove" recorded by the bluegrass band Southern Rail. Another demo tape came to the attention of A&M who hooked Griffin up with legendary producer Nile Rodgers, but in the end the label eschewed the material from these session in favour of the singer's original tape. They chose to release the raw demo unaltered as her debut album, complete with the distortion caused by her powerful vocals. Living With Ghosts drew vivid pictures, with Griffin's remarkable voice weaving itself around her bleak tales populated by losers and loners.
