JoBoxers
This pop-soul outfit achieved minor fame in the early 80s with a sound built on fast beats and imagery from the film On The Waterfront. JoBoxers comprised Dig Wayne (b. 20 July 1958, USA; vocals), Rob Marche (b. 13 October 1962, Bristol, England; guitar), Dave Collard (b. 17 January 1961, Bristol, England; keyboards), Chris Bostock (b. 23 November 1962, Bristol, England; bass) and Sean McLusky (b. 5 May 1961, Bristol, England; drums). All except Wayne were former members of Vic Godard And The Subway Sect (from 1981 onwards), the last incarnation of a punk band who ended their career by backing Goddard's affected crooning. As JoBoxers they first attracted attention after appearing on the BBC television's Oxford Roadshow in 1982. Signed to RCA Records, in February 1983 they released "Boxer Beat", which was a Top 5 hit in the UK. The follow-up "Just Got Lucky" also went into the Top 10 and reached the US Top 40, but subsequent singles such as "Johnny Friendly" and "Jealous Love" did less well. The band split early in 1986, with Wayne going on to a brief solo career (one album, Square Business, 1987) with a band that featured Dave Collard of JoBoxers and Mark Reilly (ex-Matt Bianco). After their demise McLusky gained a reputation as a promoter on the club scene.
