Daniel Johnston is one of rock's most endearing outsider artists. Having battled manic depression his entire life, Johnston began self-releasing fractured pop songs in the late 1980s. After coming to the attention of several big-name underground rock acts, Johnston emerged as a bona fide cult star in the '90s. Although his music is often overshadowed by his illness and the occasionally bizarre behavior that is its byproduct, he's produced a body of work filled with lovely, lo-fi pop songs, some of which are downright brilliant.
