Archers of Loaf
Formed in the USA in 1991 when singer Eric Bachmann met guitarist Eric Johnson on a bus in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the Archers Of Loaf quickly distinguished themselves with a healthy disrespect for pomposity and grandeur in their decidedly lo-fi recordings. With the addition of fellow University of Carolina students Mark Price (drums) and Matt Gentling (bass), they recorded a debut single, "Wrong", that earned them a contract with San Francisco label Alias. The Archers name itself was something of a giveaway, an impression of a band given to self-depreciation confirmed with the arrival of a single entitled "Toast", which included the line: "She's an indie rocker, and nothing's gonna stop her'. This was housed on the band's well-received 1993 debut album, Icky Mettle, a collection of obtuse musical ideas and defiant lyrical cheek. After the release of a five-track EP, Vs The Greatest Of All Time, they earned recognition for their fine performance at 1994"s Reading Festival and for rejecting the attentions of the big record labels (including Madonna's Maverick), before starting work on a second album. Vee Vee continued the thread of their debut with the superior "Underachievers March And Fight Song" leading from the rear. The Speed Of Cattle was a credible hotch-potch of potato peelings, b-sides and even a BBC Peel Session recording.
