Hubert Laws
b. 10 November 1939, Houston, Texas, USA. The brother of saxophonist Ronnie Laws, flautist Hubert has enjoyed successful careers in both classical and jazz contexts. In the 60s and 70s he recorded for Atlantic Records and Creed Taylor's CTI label, enjoying particular commercial success with crossover albums such as Afro Classic and The Rite Of Spring. Like most of his early 70s albums they featured Laws performing on Don Sebesky's arrangements of classical themes. He played in the New York Jazz Sextet while retaining a place in the New York Metropolitan Opera House and the New York Philharmonic orchestras. Despite several disappointing albums with Columbia Records and a quiet period during the 80s, Laws returned with two accomplished sets for the Music Masters label in the mid-90s. Laws also performed a series of concerts with classical flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal. Having played with Gunther Schuller, James Moody, Clark Terry and many others, Laws' virtuosity has done much to increase the flute's credibility in the jazz world.
